Welcome to Kirkby Lonsdale

Surrounded by countryside and set on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this compact, walkable town puts you in easy reach of the counties of Cumbria, Lancashire and North Yorkshire. A short drive will take you into the Central Lakes, with Kendal and Lancaster within easy reach.

In 2019 Kirkby Lonsdale was awarded ‘Best Place to Live in the UK’ by the Times newspaper, but visitors have been coming for decades for its independent shops, quality restaurants, healthy outdoor activities and quirky festivals.

And of course this historic town has many stories to tell. Check out the legend of Devil’s Bridge while you enjoy a picnic on its banks. Enjoy looking out over Ruskin’s View as you learn about Ruskin and Turner’s relationships with the town. And hear how Peter Pan was inspired by its residents.

Come and see us at the Visitor Information Centre and Gift Shop where we can give you our top tips about what to see and do. Or ask us about a free Vault Tour of the town to meet some colourful local characters.
